How Unit Conversion Works

Most unit conversions use a fixed ratio between two units. To convert kilometers to miles, multiply by 0.6214. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.2046. The key is knowing the conversion factor for each pair.

Temperature is the exception. Because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin have different zero points, temperature conversion requires a formula with an offset, not just multiplication. For example, °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.

Data units can also cause confusion. Storage is measured in bytes (KB, MB, GB, TB), while transfer speeds use bits (Mbps, Gbps). Since 1 byte = 8 bits, dividing a speed in Mbps by 8 gives the equivalent in MB/s.

Finding the Right Converter

Each category hub groups related units together. If you know the units you need, use the converter above or search by name. If you are converting between metric and imperial systems, start with the length or weight hubs. For cooking and recipes, the volume hub covers cups, tablespoons, and fluid ounces. For file sizes and bit-to-byte conversions, use the data hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most searched unit conversions are kilometers to miles, kilograms to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit, liters to gallons, and mph to km/h. These cover the most common metric-to-imperial and imperial-to-metric needs for travel, cooking, fitness, and everyday use.
Each metric-to-imperial conversion has a specific factor. For length, multiply kilometers by 0.6214 to get miles, or meters by 3.2808 to get feet. For weight, multiply kilograms by 2.2046 to get pounds. For volume, multiply liters by 0.2642 to get gallons. Temperature uses a different formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. See the formulas hub for complete guides.
MB (megabyte) is a unit of data measured in bytes. Mb (megabit) is measured in bits. The difference is a factor of 8: 1 MB = 8 Mb. File sizes use bytes (KB, MB, GB), while network speeds are often quoted in bits (Mbps). To convert between them, divide or multiply by 8. See the data converter for all bit and byte conversions.
Unlike other unit conversions that use simple multiplication, temperature requires offset formulas because the scales have different zero points. Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9. Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15. See the temperature converter for instant results.
